Volume seven, number nine: In Advance of the Broken Arm by Marcel Duchamp.

Hello, and welcome to Listening to Art. I’m William Denton.

In this issue we return to Marcel Duchamp, the greatest artist of the twentieth century. We have already heard this particular work four times in three different galleries, which is possible because when Duchamp remade the piece in 1964, based on a 1915 original, he made more than one. Volume one number one was recorded at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa; volume one number two at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; volume two number five at the Royal Academy of Arts in London; and volume four number twelve again at the National Gallery of Canada. Here we listen to a new copy in a new city.

This is a sculpture, made of wood and galvanized steel, fitting into a volume roughly 35 cm wide, 135 cm high and 12 cm deep.
